Learn Cyber Security That Protects You in Real Life
This page is designed to help people take immediate, practical action. Use the checklist below, follow the emergency steps if you suspect an attack, and explore trusted resources to keep learning.
Quick Start Checklist
If you only do six things today, do these.
- Turn on automatic updates for your phone, browser, and operating system.
- Use a password manager and create unique passwords for every account.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for email, banking, and social accounts.
- Back up important files weekly using cloud backup or an external drive.
- Install reputable antivirus/endpoint protection and run weekly scans.
- Learn how to verify links before clicking (hover on desktop, long-press on mobile).
Spot Phishing Fast
Watch for urgent pressure, fake login pages, lookalike domains, and requests for codes or money.
Before you trust a message, verify it through an official channel you already know (not one from the message).
If you are unsure, do not click. Screenshot the message and report it to your IT team or provider.
Think You Were Hacked? Do This First
- Disconnect from the internet if you suspect malware or account takeover.
- Change passwords from a clean device, starting with your email account.
- Revoke unknown sessions/apps from account security settings.
- Run a full antivirus scan and remove suspicious software.
- Notify your bank/employer if financial or work data may be affected.
- Document what happened (time, message, sender, screenshots) before reporting.
Personal Security Habits
- • Never reuse passwords between email, banking, and social accounts.
- • Lock devices with PIN/biometric and auto-lock after inactivity.
- • Review account login history monthly.
- • Remove browser extensions you do not trust or use.
Home and Small Business Network Security
- • Change default router admin credentials immediately.
- • Use WPA3/WPA2 encryption and disable WPS.
- • Place IoT devices on a separate guest network when possible.
- • Keep router firmware updated and reboot after major updates.
